The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration grants a five-year exemption to Aurora Operations, Inc. and other motor carriers operating Level 4 automated driving system-equipped commercial motor vehicles from certain warning device placement and type requirements. The exemption, effective October 7, 2026 through October 7, 2031, permits use of cab-mounted warning beacons instead of traditional warning devices, which the agency determined provides equivalent or greater safety than the existing regulations.

Why it matters: The exemption allows specified motor carriers to operate automated vehicles under modified safety equipment standards while remaining under FMCSA oversight through the exemption period.
